Position #1 - Volunteer Services Project Assistants

*Location: Remote/Hybrid

This position supports the operations of the Volunteer Services Department through various tasks. Most work will take place remotely, with occasional in-person tasks required at Long Island City headquarters or other Fortune Society locations.

Responsibilities: 

  • Volunteer Newsletter:
    • Writing 200- to 500-word articles (for example, highlighting service of a volunteer or intern); taking pictures of an event and creating a Canva page; creating an infographic. 
    • Occasional travel to other Fortune Society locations/locations in NYC may be required to create newsletter content. 
  • Data entry, audit, and tracking:
    • Ongoing review all volunteer and academic inter recorded service hours. Reaching out to those via email or phone if hours are missing or need input. 
  • Other projects:
    • Coordinate Community Service for participants in the Alternatives To Incarceration program (phone calls with participants ironing out details that are then written out and shared with all parties, follow-up with supervisors, transfer emailed hours of service to individuals records, draft letters for courts).
  • Bonus if you can video or edit video (staff interviews, events, etc.).
  • *Optional Concentration: Assistant can choose to focus their work on retrieving data in the volunteer database, analyzing that data, and organizing its display for a multi-year report for the Volunteer Department. This report would ultimately be sent to the board of directors. Assistant would work remotely but meet regularly with Director of the department and would need to seek self-study videos of the database (Volgistics) available online. 

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18+ years of age.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Availability and willingness to meet with supervisor once per week via zoom at set time/date.
  • Follow through, communication, dependability are qualities the candidate must have to do this role successfully. 
  • Preferred: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior.

Position #2 - Food Distribution Volunteer

*Location: In-person at The Academy (625 W 140th Street, Harlem).

One to three volunteers will work together with staff each Wednesday to set up and break down a food demonstration as well as fill bags of food that are then distributed to about 80 to 300 Castle residents and neighboring community members. Shifts take place on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:30 PM outside (dress accordingly).

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and break down food demonstration station.
  • Distribute bags of food (must be able to lift a min of 20 lbs.).
  • Help maintain orderly line up. 
  • Bonus if you can speak Spanish.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18+ years of age.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs.
  • Ability to arrive promptly and communicate if running late.
  • Availability to work on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:30 PM.
  • Preferred: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior.

Position #3 - Resume Assistant

*Location: In-person at 29-76 Northern Blvd, Long Island City.

The goal of the Resume Coach Volunteer is to help the Employment Services team assist job-seeking participants in creating or revising their resumes to prepare for re-entering the workforce. Volunteers will work one-on-one in-person assistance to participants. Shifts take place one day a week for four hours, 9:30 AM-1:30 PM -or- 12:30-4:30 PM, on a Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs.

Responsibilities: 

  • Meet with participants in-person at our Long Island City service center location.
  • Navigate Google Drive resources and templates.
  • Ask questions to participants related to their hard and soft skills, previous work experience, course/certification history, etc. to populate their resume.
  • Create a welcoming, safe, informative, engaging, professional and respectful space for participants.
  • Learn how to format/display participant information that highlights their employability and minimizes justice-involvement.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18+ years of age.
  • Strong skills in Google Suite (Gmail, G-Drive) and Microsoft Office (Word).
  • Comfortable with talking about sensitive topics with our community members.
  • Experience writing resumes for yourself and/or others.
  • Experience asking questions to pull relevant information and/or the ability to find/display transferable skills or experiences.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ideal candidate would express sincere sensitivity toward the populations represented in The Fortune Society and assist them without bias.
  • Preferred: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior.
  • Bonus: Spanish fluency.

Position#1 - After School Program Data Collection Assistant

*Location: Hybrid/Washington Heights

The After School Program Data Collection Assistant will support the administrative team by gathering, organizing, and analyzing essential data required to complete the program’s bi-yearly report on goals and outcomes. This role is crucial in ensuring the accurate and timely collection of data, which includes report cards, parent and student surveys, teacher feedback, program attendance, and school attendance.

Reports to: Head of Programming and Family Empowerment Coordinator

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the collection of report cards and academic performance data from partner schools.
  • Distribute, collect, and organize parent and student surveys to gather feedback on program impact and effectiveness.
  • Gather and summarize teacher feedback on student progress and program effectiveness.
  • Monitor and record program attendance data, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Track and compare student school attendance to program participation data.
  • Input and organize collected data into designated databases or spreadsheets.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports by providing summarized data and insights as required by the admin staff.
  • Support the administrative team in maintaining up-to-date and accurate records.
  • Participate in meetings to discuss data collection strategies and progress.

Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) or Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets).

Position #2 - Elementary School Program Curriculum Support Assistant

The Elementary School Program Curriculum Support Assistant will assist the Program Coordinator in developing and enhancing the curriculum for extracurricular activities and projects for students in grades K-5. This role involves supporting the design and implementation of creative, educational, and engaging programs that align with the overall objectives of the after-school program.

Reports to: Elementary School Program Coordinator

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator to develop and refine extracurricular activity plans for grades K-5.
  • Assist in creating curriculum materials, including lesson plans, project outlines, and activity guides.
  • Research and propose new activities or projects that promote student engagement, creativity, and learning.
  • Support the Program Coordinator in organizing and preparing materials needed for program activities.
  • Provide feedback and suggestions for curriculum improvement based on student interests and needs.
  • Help in evaluating the effectiveness of activities and projects, collecting feedback from group leaders.
  • Attend planning meetings and contribute to brainstorming sessions for new program ideas.

Harlem Grown

Position #1 - Operations Assistant

*Location: 127 West 127th Street

Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability through the lens of racial justice, food justice, social justice, and equity. Youth focused programs include intensive school partnerships, educational farm tours, a summer camp, a Saturday enrichment program, monthly community events, an after school program, and the Mobile Teaching Kitchen. Community development programs open to all ages include wellness workshops, special events, food scrap collection for composting, and fresh produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents.

Students may work across departments with a wide range of responsibilities, to be determined in partnership with Harlem Grown upon placement. Ideal candidates are passionate about Harlem Grown’s work and want to build their skills while supporting Harlem Grown’s mission to inspire youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through hands on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition.

Potential Responsibilities May Include:

Programming Team:

  • Prepping food and materials for lessons.
  • Bringing materials between Harlem Grown sites.
  • Checking inventory and stocking supplies.
  • Cleaning up after lessons.

Agriculture Team:

  • Support community food distribution at farm stands.
  • Performing farm tasks including watering, weeding, pest management, harvesting, transplanting soil, supporting mushroom growing operations, chicken care, composting or raking or spreading mulch.

Development Team:

  • Support drafting letters to donors, newsletters, or copy for grant applications.
  • Support collecting data to report to funders.
  • Prospecting new grants and funding opportunities.
  • Participating in service days on the farm.

Marketing Team:

  • Creating social media and newsletter content.
  • Creating flyers for upcoming events and awareness campaigns.
  • Taking photos at events and of Harlem Grown sites.
  • Performing market research and proposing awareness campaigns.
  • Collecting data from community members through surveys and tabling.

Operations or Partnerships Teams:

  • Taking inventory and stocking supplies and snacks for staff.
  • Helping with filing and documentation.
  • Supporting with setup and beautification of new office spaces or events.
  • Ordering and coordinating all-staff lunches and other events.
  • Prepping rooms for professional development and staff meetings.
  • Updating wall postings and flyers.
  • Support community engagement at tabling events.
  • Research, reporting, and information gathering.
