The competitive Global Thought Scholars program was established in 2023 to expose undergraduate students to the trans-regional and trans-disciplinary approaches of the CGT and to support students’ collaborative research efforts. We welcomed our third cohort in December.
The 2025 GTS cohort includes 12 students representing all four of Columbia’s undergraduate schools (Columbia College, Barnard College, General Studies, and Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science). These sophomores and juniors were selected for their academic records, commitment to new ways of learning, and diversity of backgrounds and disciplines.
In Spring 2025, the Scholars will enroll in Approaches to Global Thought with Professor Laura Neitzel, where they will work together to develop collaborative research projects as they explore trans-disciplinary approaches to contemporary questions. Scholars will receive stipends to conduct research with their project teams over the summer and will reconvene for a Research Symposium in Fall 2025 to present their completed projects.
This year’s Global Thought Scholars will bring a wide range of disciplinary experience to their collaborative research. The cohort includes 13 majors: Computer Science, Creative Writing, Economics, Environmental Biology, Film, Human Rights, Medical Humanities, Neuroscience, Operations Research: Engineering Management Systems, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Urban Studies. The Committee on Global Thought is grateful to David Bartsch and Joan Haffenreffer Bartsch and to Citi for their generous support of the Global Thought Scholars Program.
