This past March, 2024 Global Thought Scholar Caroline Mendoza celebrated the opening of her exhibit, “Welcome is a Woman: Hawai’i and Tourism in the US Imagination” in Lehman Library.

This exhibit is based on her research in the GTS Program, and involved extensive use of library collections and the guidance of librarians. It showcases advertisements for tourism in Hawai’i and interrogates the ways narratives of US possession of Hawaiian territory leveraged welcoming representations of Hawaiian women. It challenges exhibit viewers to unlearn harmful stereotypes about Hawai’i.

In collaboration with the Global Studies Department and Columbia University Libraries, the exhibition will be displayed on the Lower Level of Lehman Library until the end of this semester.
