I am a junior at Barnard College majoring in sociocultural anthropology and minoring in economics. I grew up in Hangzhou, a city near Shanghai in China, and spent two years studying in Singapore before moving to New York City. My immersive experience in these “global cities” has inspired my interest in thinking about globality and locality in the progress of urbanization. I am also concerned about the inequality associated with urbanization in “global cities” because many disadvantaged groups become invisible under the gloss of prosperity.
